Let’s take ਮੇਰਾ as an example. As you can see, the possessive pronoun ਮੇਰਾ has 4 variations: ਮੇਰਾ (singular masculine), ਮੇਰੀ (singular feminine), ਮੇਰੇ (plural masculine), and ਮੇਰੀਆਂ (plural feminine). The other possessive pronouns will follow this structure. Just take the stem of the word (in this case, ਮੇਰ) and add the appropriate ending.

If you are in the process of deciding what possessive pronoun to use with a word, take a look at the ending of the object and match the endings. For example, if you want to say “my daughters”, it would make sense to use ਮੇਰੀਆਂ along with ਬੱਚੀਆਂ.

Objective Pronouns

Objective pronouns are used to represent nouns when they are followed by a postposition. For example, in the sentence “he threw the ball to me”, me is the objective pronoun because it is the object of the verb. In Punjabi, objective pronouns are placed right after the subject and they are represented by the following:

To

To

Me

ਮੈਨੂੰ

ਸਾਨੂੰ

Us

You (s)

ਤੈਨੂੰ

ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ

You (p)

Him/Her

ਉਹ/ਉਸ/ਇਹ/ਇਸ + ਨੂੰ

ਉਨਾਂ/ਇਹਨਾਂ + ਨੂੰ

Them

Here are two example sentences:

ਉਹ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ| → He is saying something to me.

ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹੱਸਾਉੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ| → I make you laugh.

Finally, here is a table comparing personal, possessive, and objective pronouns:

Personal pronoun

Possessive Pronouns

Objective Pronouns

1st person

ਮੈਂ

ਮੇਰਾ, ਮੇਰੇ, ਮੇਰੀ, ਮੇਰੀਆਂ

ਮੈਨੂੰ

ਅਸੀਂ

ਸਾਡਾ,ਸਾਡੇ, ਸਾਡੀ, ਸਾਡੀਆਂ

ਸਾਨੂੰ

2nd

Person

ਤੂੰ

ਤੇਰਾ, ਤੇਰੇ, ਤੇਰੀ, ਤੇਰੀਆਂ

ਤੈਨੂੰ

ਤੁਸੀਂ

ਤੁਹਾਡਾ, ਤੁਹਾਡੇ, ਤੁਹਾਡੀ, ਤੁਹਾਡੀਆਂ

ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ

3rd person

Possessive pronouns are important for complex sentences because we cannot indicate possession or ownership in sentences without possessive pronouns.
